Social Media is a platform with numerous capabilities, possibilities beyond one's control and many a time people use it as a source of entertainment. People hoax the readers, and in no time a story based on some baseless rumour is spread across all the streets of the city. Believe me or not, social media plays a vital role in it, people read things they like to read and share it with other people with similar interests. In no time everyone knows about something that never actually happened. They believe it because they want to, and they never care to review it before sharing it with other people. That, in turn, results in the formation of negative personal opinions.
The reason I am writing about rumours is critical, I once was suggested a topic that itself was a hoax, and I started writing about it. I kept writing until I googled to look for some facts related to the same but, to my surprise, it came out to be a bogus piece of information. It broke my heart, and instead of writing, I started thinking about the credibility of everything I had ever written. So, the first thing I did was to shut down all my recent projects and started writing this. I researched a little to understand different kinds of social media rumours.
Rumours follow a grapevine form of communication. The information is usually related to a fact that is either of particular interest or the public interest like a social experiment or falsities of the social networks. By falsities, I am pointing towards the rumours that claim things like "Facebook would start to charge people who use the platform". The share or retweet button on social media spreads information faster than ever before. You might have seen a large number of emails promising a sort of reward on sharing a message with multiple people. These are not only limited to emails. They ask you to share the campaign on different social media platforms to "make a difference". These campaigns spread like wildfire as they get connected the heartstrings of the reader. The idea that birds die by eating gums has spread in recent years. False alarms of a celebrity's death by their so-called "haters" are affecting the young generation.
I am not here to criticise the social media platform. My point is to promote awareness towards such events. Today, people love to know what's going on in someone else's life. If you are looking for news, then there are reliable sources available, I would personally recommend the use of news aggregator applications like "Inshorts". They supply news according to your particular interests and are reliable.
A key point to remember while posting over social media is, never share news posted by someone else unless you are confident about its credibility. It will take a minute to verify, and that would save you from circulating a rumour. Remember, every share counts.
A note to the writers:-
You might be influencing a truckload of readers, so, it is good to think over the way your post influences others. The ability of a writer to serve genuine information to the readers builds the credibility of a writer. So, before presenting your opinion to a large community, verify it.
